2021 ITN Mass Campaign: 570 Town Announcers Trained in Gombe

Ahead of the upcoming mass distribution of Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs) in Gombe State, the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) in collaboration with the State Primary Health Care Development Agency commenced training of 5 town announcers each from the 114 wards of the State in a bid to create the much-needed awareness to all and sundry across the state.

The training is aimed at educating the town announcers on the key campaign messages which include the dates of the net distribution that will happen door-to-door as well messages on how to use and care for the nets after collection

Our Correspondent reported that more than,150 people are currently receiving training as town announcers in 3 Local Government councils, namely Gombe, Akko and Yamaltu/Deba local government areas.

Speaking to Blueprint, Muhammed Auwal Abdullahi, the facilitator in Akko Local Government training Centre at the central Primary school Kumo, said that 55 people were selected in the Local government to receive the training on how to educate the general public on the importance of the use of mosquito net to prevent malaria and protect their health.

Auwal said strict measures were put in place to ensure a hitch-free awareness of the people of Akko Local government.

“Anybody (town announcers) who absconds (from work) will not be paid for that day, and they will work for twenty-two days enlightening the general public”, Abdullahi said.

Also speaking Shehu Wakil, Health Education officer of the Primary Healthcare Development Agency Gombe, Local Government who doubles as the officer in the charge of the training of town announcers in the local governments, said 55 personnel were selected to receive the training.

“The township announcers will enlighten people in Gombe Local Government to leave someone at home to collect the Mosquito Net and make use of it properly, in preventing Malaria and possible elimination of the disease in the area.

“We have 11ward and each ward will have 5 personnel for the enlightenment programme.

The door-to-door distribution of the insecticide-treated nets will commence from 3rd – 14th September 2021 across the state.
