Zulum Unveils N20.4bn Infrastructure Boost with New Flyover, Dual Carriageway in Maiduguri

Borno State Governor Professor Babagana Umara Zulum has launched a massive N20.4 billion infrastructure upgrade in Maiduguri and Jere local council areas, flagging off the construction of a new flyover bridge and dual carriageway aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity across the metropolis.
The projects—located at the bustling Post Office area and along the Biu Road corridor—mark a significant step in Zulum’s broader urban renewal initiative. During Tuesday’s groundbreaking ceremony in Maiduguri, the governor emphasised that the undertaking was part of his administration’s commitment to fulfilling campaign promises focused on infrastructure and development.
“This is a strategic intervention to ease vehicular movement and reduce travel time for commuters and businesses,” Zulum stated. “We are determined to ensure the rapid and efficient flow of goods and services across the state capital and its adjoining communities.”
The Post Office flyover bridge is slated to cost N15.9 billion, while the 7.1-kilometre dual carriageway with a bridge over River Ngadda leading to Molai community is pegged at N4.5 billion. Governor Zulum revealed that 50 percent of the contract sum—approximately N10.2 billion—has already been disbursed to the executing firm, Eighteenth Engineering Company (EEC), as mobilization.
The two projects are expected to be completed within ten and seven months respectively, a timeline Zulum described as “realistic and essential” for boosting the state’s infrastructure backbone.
Speaking at the ceremony, Borno State Commissioner for Works and Housing, Engr. Mustapha Gubio, charged the contractor to adhere strictly to project specifications to guarantee durability and safety for all road users.
Gubio also highlighted that the new Post Office flyover brings the total number of flyovers constructed under Zulum’s administration to four. Others include the Customs flyover (N4.3 billion), Borno Terminus bridge (N5.04 billion), and the West End flyover (N7.9 billion), bringing the cumulative investment in flyover infrastructure to a staggering N37.64 billion in the last five years.
As the state intensifies efforts to transform Maiduguri into a modern urban hub, these projects are expected to not only improve traffic flow but also stimulate economic activities and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.
