Arson: INEC office set ablaze in Ebonyi

Numerous voters’ cards, 340 ballot boxes, 130 voting cubicles, 14 electric power generators, among other valuables have been destroyed in an attack on a local office of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ebonyi.
INEC said Unidentified persons set the local office ablaze on Sunday.
INEC National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, who disclosed in a statement on Sunday night, said the incident occurred at about 10 a.m. at Izzi Local Government Area office in Iboko.

According to the statement, Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Onyeka Ugochi, had informed INEC headquarters, Abuja, of the development.
Mr Okoye said, “Although no casualties resulted from the attack, the main building and all the movable and immovable items inside it were destroyed.
“These include 340 ballot boxes, 130 voting cubicles, 14 electric power generators, large water storage tanks, assorted office furniture and fixtures and yet to be determined quantities of Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs).”
A clip posted on INEC’s Facebook page showed the destroyed building, with fire still burning inside.
This is the third attack on an INEC local office in less than three weeks following similar attacks on the commission’s offices in Ogun and Osun states on 10 November, Mr Okoye said, adding that the attack had been reported to the police and other security agencies.
