ASUP Postpones Nationwide Strike to December 2 for FG Compliance
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has postponed its planned nationwide strike to December 2, giving the Federal Government additional time to meet its demands.
ASUP National President, Mr. Kpanja Shammah, made this announcement following an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Saturday in Abuja. The union initially issued a 15-day ultimatum on October 7 for the government to address specific grievances.
The union’s demands include concerns about the National Board for Technical Education’s (NBTE) involvement in admissions, infrastructure revitalization through the NEEDS Assessment program, implementation of promotions in state institutions, and the payment of outstanding promotion arrears.
ASUP also seeks the settlement of arrears related to the 25% and 35% salary review for federal polytechnics and colleges of technology for January to December 2023.
Following a stakeholder meeting organized by the Federal Ministry of Education on October 23, which led to the development of an action plan, ASUP’s NEC opted to defer the strike, awaiting signs of government compliance with the agreed resolutions.
“We expect the government to demonstrate commitment by addressing each of the eleven outstanding issues in the action plan,” Shammah said.
