Bauchi Businessman Petitions Police Commissioner Over Alleged Brutality
Bauchi businessman Mr. Jibrin Dahiru has taken a bold step to seek justice for what he alleges was intimidation, violence, assault, and harassment inflicted upon him by a police officer.
Dahiru has lodged a formal petition to Police Commissioner Auwal Musa Mohammed of the Bauchi Command, detailing the alleged misconduct perpetrated by ASP Abdulmalik Tukur Abubakar of the Command’s Rapid Response Squad (RRS).
The petition, brought forward by his legal representative, An-Nur Chambers, and dated April 23, 2024, outlines the disturbing events that transpired in March 2024.
According to the document, Dahiru was going about his business in his shop at Wunti Market, Bauchi, when a confrontation ensued with some motorcycle riders obstructing his shop’s visibility to potential customers.
In the midst of this disagreement, ASP Abdulmalik Tukur Abubakar allegedly intervened aggressively, verbally abusing Dahiru in addition to physically assaulting him.
The situation escalated to the point where Dahiru, feeling threatened, retaliated with a slap in self-defense. Subsequent to this altercation, Dahiru claims he was pursued relentlessly by Abubakar, who revealed himself as a police officer, exacerbating Dahiru’s distress and leading him to evade arrest.
Despite Dahiru’s eventual surrender to the authorities, his ordeal persisted, the petition alleges that upon reporting to the police headquarters, Dahiru was subjected to further mistreatment, including torture resulting in physical pain and suffering.
The petitioners, acting on behalf of Dahiru, have urged the Police Commissioner to conduct a discreet investigation into the matter and take appropriate action against ASP Abdulmalik Tukur Abubakar.
The legal representative emphasise the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that instances of police misconduct are thoroughly addressed to maintain public trust in law enforcement agencies.
“This petition serves not only as a call for justice for Mr. Jibrin Dahiru but also as a reminder of the responsibility entrusted to law enforcement officers to uphold the rights and dignity of every citizen.
The outcome of this case will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications for the relationship between the police and the community they serve in Bauchi State.
