Bauchi Special School need special attention says-Principal

By Ahmed Ahmed

The management of Special School for the Deaf and Blind Bauchi has decried the treatment of the institution as a conventional school despite the peculiar needs of its students.

The Principal of the school, Malam Ishiaku Dauda made the call when a team of Civil Society Organizations CSOs, representatives of state Rural Water Supply Agency (RUWASA) and Primary Healthcare Agency paid advocacy visits to the school.

He said the school, with a population of about 630 students, lacks basic Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities as existing ones were either in a dilapidated condition or have packed up and remain non-functional.
Dauda who commended state RUWASA, Primary Healthcare Development Agency and CSOs for identifying with the school, requested for urgent support to rehabilitate broken-down boreholes and dilapidated toilets, the supply of drugs to the clinic as well as books to the school shelves.

Earlier, the leader of the advocacy team Mr Magaji Barde of a Bauchi based NGO – WODASS said the visit aimed to assess availability and functionality of WASH facilities in the school as part of an effort to check the spread of cholera and Covid-19.

He implored the State Government to urgently come to the aid of the Special School Bauchi because most of the students are from the poor parental background, adding that “Water Aid Nigeria in Partnership with State RUWASA, Primary Healthcare Development Agency and CSOs would assist the special school in line with their respective mandates”.

Also speaking, the head boy of the Special School Sam’an Shuaibu and the head girl Ladi David both enumerated the pressing needs of the students to include lack of clean water source, functional library, inadequate mattresses and beds, sanitary items as well as insufficient teachers for blind students as many of those transferred are yet to be replaced.
