Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has earmarked N20 billion for the rebuilding of several infrastructures destroyed in the recent floods that claimed 50 lives and property in Maiduguri metropolis and two local government areas.
Announcing the release of funds Sunday in Maiduguri, Zulum disclosed: “Fifty percent of the fund, which is N10 billion, has been earmarked to support the flood victims in various communities.”
He stated that the allocation will enable the victims to pick up the pieces of their lives after the destruction of their property, including 5, 000 hectares of farmland.
The governor, therefore, directed that the N10b be credited into the state’s relief account handled by the flood victims disbursement committee (FVDC), including the EFCC and ICPC, as well as security agencies.
The remaining N10 billion, as directed by the governor, was handed over to the state’s Ministry of Works and Housing.
Zulum also expressed gratitude to the federal government for its tireless support during the flood disaster.
“I commend the federal government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for all the support, from the quantum of food donated by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture,” he said.
The governor equally appreciated individuals, state governments, corporate entities, INGOs, and NGOs for supporting Borno in its time of dire need.
He noted that despite the fact that the flood had receded, the dam continues to flow, posing an economic threat to the state and inhabitants using the dam’s resources for domestic and dry-season farming.
