Borno forum begs FG to relocate Giwa barrack over Boko Haram attacks
The Bale Galtimari Consultative (BGC) forum has urged the Federal Government and military to relocate Giwa barracks over the incessant attacks by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists.
According to the forum, the community surrounding the barrack had severally been attacked by the insurgents, including the last month’s multiple explosions.
The barrack’s relocation call was made yesterday at a press conference in Maiduguri by the Special Adviser to Governor Babagana Zulum on culture and regional integration.
He said the sitting of a military barrack in the midst of the Galtimari community, with a population of over a million, poses security threats to both life and property in Maiduguri.
He lamented the experiences of residents that led to “shocks and traumas” whenever the insurgents targeted the barrack for an attack. Boguma added that during the previous attacks, including the recent one at the barrack, over a dozen residents had heart attacks in the community.
He, therefore, urged the federal government to relocate the barrack to the outskirts of Maiduguri, like the Maimalari Cantonment along Baga Road.
Besides the relocation of barracks, the SA stated, “If we are to overcome this latest wave of insecurity, the time has come for all the stakeholders, including elected officials and community leaders, to rise above personal comfort and political silence in protecting people’s lives and property.
Boguma noted that Governor Babagana Zulum has done more than his fair share, stating that the governor’s tireless efforts in restoring dignity, peace, and development of Borno are on record.
