In a significant move to ensure citizens’ inclusiveness in governance, accountability, and transparency, Governor Mai Mala Buni will engage the people at a town hall meeting.
The maiden May 29, 2025 meeting will serve as a direct forum for citizens to interact with Buni by asking him about the implementations of government policies and projects across the state.
Unveiling the direct interactions with the governor on Sunday in Damaturu, the Special Adviser to Buni on Radio, Television, and Digital Media, Dr. Ibrahim Muhammed Yabani, said, “The May 29 Town Hall meeting will provide a forum for citizens to interact with the governor, ask the various questions and updates on the ongoing implementations of government policies and people-oriented projects that could improve their living conditions.”
Besides the engagement of people on inclusiveness and accountability, Yabani added that the town hall meeting will also provide an effective forum for the elected officials and stakeholders to engage in an open dialogue with the sharing of updates on government policies and projects in each of the 17 local councils, including the border communities with Niger.
He noted that the engagement of Buni with the people could enable them to ask questions directly and get clarifications on the government policies and programmes being implemented to safeguard citizens’ lives and property.
He stated that the political development is a global practice towards transparency, inclusiveness, and accountability in the delivery of dividends of democracy to the people.
The SA also emphasized that the town hall meeting was to promote trust, integrity, and accountability to the people to ensure participatory governance at the grassroots.
He added that the meeting will also enable the public to play active roles in shaping government policies and programmes in a democratically elected government in the state.
“No individuals, organisations, civil society, women’s groups, and the media will be barred from attending the forthcoming town hall meeting with Buni on Thursday,” he assured, stating, “In the long run, we are to organize separate town hall meetings in the local languages of the people,” said Yabani, stressing that the adoption of local languages could ensure effective participation of the people at town hall meetings.
