The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Gombe State chapter, has, in commemoration of the 2025 Children’s Day, called on children across the state to pursue excellence in their academics and moral conduct.
The group also issued a clarion call to government institutions, parents, and civil society to intensify efforts in ensuring child protection and welfare.
Speaking during a commemorative event organised to mark the occasion at Government Science Secondary School (GSSS 2) Gombe, the Chairperson of FIDA, Talatu Abubakar, emphasised that empowering children is crucial in building a better future, adding that education is a key to unlocking their potential. He said, “It is our collective responsibility to ensure that every child has access to quality education, free from discrimination and violence.”
“As we celebrate Children’s Day, let us recommit to protecting and promoting the rights of children. Let us work together to create a society where every child can thrive, learn, and grow in a safe and nurturing environment,” the Chairperson said.
While assuring that the Gombe state branch of FIDA is committed to promoting and protecting the rights of children, she said, “We work tirelessly to ensure that children are safe, educated, and empowered to reach their full potential. Today, we celebrate the resilience and potential of our children.
“To the students of GSSS 2 Gombe, I urge you to take advantage of the opportunities available to you. Work hard, be curious, and strive for excellence. Your education is a powerful tool that will shape your future and the future of our society,” Abubakar stated.
In a related development, the Gombe State chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) organised a sensitisation session for students at Government Day Secondary School, Herwa Gana, Gombe, to also mark the 2025 Children’s Day.
The event featured an awareness talk focusing on the dangers of drug abuse, aimed at educating young minds on the long-term consequences of substance misuse.
Speaking at the occasion, the Gombe NBA Chairman, Barr. Benjamin Sati, emphasised the critical importance of making informed life choices. He urged students to steer clear of drugs and addictive substances, warning that drug abuse poses serious threats to their health, future, and overall wellbeing.
The chairman told newsmen that the sensitisation is part of the NBA’s commitment to social responsibility and youth empowerment, reinforcing the need to protect children from harmful behaviours through education and legal advocacy.
