Concerned Citizens of Northern Nigeria Urge Support for Sen. Ali Ndume in Opposition to Controversial Tax Act
The Concerned Citizens of Northern Nigeria (CCNN) have called on people across the region to rally behind Senator Ali Ndume in his fight against the controversial Tax Act, which has sparked widespread debate. The group also criticized Senator Jibrin Barau for supporting the legislation, describing his stance as a betrayal of the interests of northern communities.
Speaking at a press briefing, the spokesperson of CCNN, Mallam Yusuf Abubakar, highlighted the potential adverse effects of the Tax Act on the socio-economic well-being of northern citizens. He argued that the legislation, if implemented, would disproportionately burden vulnerable populations already grappling with poverty and unemployment.
“Senator Ali Ndume has shown courage and genuine concern for the plight of ordinary Nigerians. He has consistently voiced opposition to policies that would harm the people he represents. We urge all well-meaning northerners to stand by him in this noble fight,” Abubakar stated.
The Tax Act has drawn mixed reactions nationwide, with some lawmakers arguing that it is necessary to boost government revenue and fund public projects. However, critics contend that the act places an undue financial strain on citizens without offering corresponding benefits.
CCNN accused Senator Jibrin Barau, a prominent supporter of the act, of prioritizing political expediency over the welfare of his constituents. “We are disappointed in Senator Barau’s decision to back this draconian policy. It is a betrayal of trust and a direct affront to the needs of the northern populace,” Abubakar added.
The group urged northern stakeholders, including traditional rulers, civil society organizations, and youth groups, to join the campaign against the act. They also called on the National Assembly to reconsider the legislation and explore alternative revenue-generation measures that do not compromise the well-being of citizens.
Senator Ndume, representing Borno South, has yet to comment on CCNN’s endorsement but has previously expressed his commitment to safeguarding the interests of his constituents and the broader Nigerian population.
The debate over the Tax Act is expected to continue, with public sentiment in the north likely playing a significant role in shaping its future.
