DHQ Debunks Misleading Reports, Says CDS Musa Never Blamed Benue Victims
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has strongly refuted claims suggesting that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, blamed victims of the recent killings in Benue State, describing such reports as misleading and taken out of context.
This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau.
According to Gusau, contrary to the distorted narratives circulating in some sections of the media, General Musa’s remarks were meant to underscore the complex nature of conflict zones and to urge communities to remain vigilant and cooperate closely with security agencies to forestall future attacks.
“The attention of the Defence Headquarters has been drawn to a news article published in a national daily, which misrepresents recent remarks made by the CDS, Gen. Musa, regarding the tragic Yelwata incident,” the statement read.
Gusau explained that the interpretation of the CDS’s comments by the National Coalition Against Mass Killings and Impunity (NCAMKI) was not only inaccurate but also dangerously misleading.
“At no point did the CDS intend to blame the victims or justify the heinous acts committed by criminal elements in Benue or any part of the country,” he said.
Rather, General Musa’s comments were framed to highlight the tactics employed by insurgent and criminal groups who infiltrate communities and exploit vulnerabilities, making it critical for local populations to work hand-in-hand with security operatives.
Gusau expressed concern that advocacy groups would choose to twist the narrative of a national tragedy to suit other interests, warning that politicising sensitive security matters could erode public trust in institutions working tirelessly to protect the nation.
“General Musa has shown unwavering commitment to safeguarding all Nigerians, irrespective of religion, ethnicity, or gender,” he added. “He continues to promote civil-military cooperation while upholding professionalism, compassion, and integrity in the Armed Forces.”
The Defence Headquarters also urged media practitioners and stakeholders to verify facts and engage in constructive dialogue rather than issuing provocative statements that could inflame tensions.
“The DHQ remains resolute in working with all communities, civil society organisations, and government agencies to restore peace, promote justice, and maintain national cohesion,” the statement concluded.
