Eid El Kabir: Ram, sheep scarcity hits Maiduguri
As the Muslims prepare for the Eid-El Kabir celebration, the prices of Ram and other animals such as goats, cows and sheep has skyrocketed than ever seen in recent times.
A businessman who deals in buying and selling such animals disclosed that the increase in prices was occasioned by the economic hardships and cost of the Animal’s feeds in the area.

People can no longer go to farm only a few who have farmlands in the outskirts of Maiduguri can afford to cultivate crops while others in the villages cannot take the risk of putting their lives on the line, thus the production of animals feed has drastically reduced, hence the rising cost of prices.
A market status survey conducted by Northeast Star revealed that a moderate Ram preferred for Sallah cost between N60,000 to N70,000.
As of the time of compiling this report, some well to do people in the area are said to have bought rams worth N110,000 and N150,000 in the market.
It was revealed that such Rams were sold for N50,000 and N60,000 this time last year.
The price hike is not limited to Animals alone as a measure of local rice is now being sold for N1,500 while Beans cost N1,800 and a bottle of cooking Oil is 800 naira respectively.
According to some residents interviewed, most people are focusing more on getting the primary needs of food preparatory to the Sallah celebration.
A resident said, “life is very hard now, there is no money and the price of everything has risen up, I used to slaughter two rams but now I can’t even have one, I will just buy rice and get some meat from butchers to celebrate the Sallah”.
Other items usually needed for the celebration are new clothing for children and women to do their Sallah with new clothes, however, the price of materials has also raised making things worse and adding to the tons of problems for the mercies.
