FERMA Initiates 2023 Maintenance Projects in Northeast II Zone; Pledges Restoration of Roads and Bridges
The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has launched its annual maintenance initiatives for 2023 within the Northeast II Zone, encompassing Gombe, Bauchi, and Adamawa States.
The inaugural phase of this year’s project involves the commencement of the fifth stage of road construction at the Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH) Gombe. The primary goal of this undertaking is to combat the issue of gully erosion while facilitating future infrastructural expansion within the facility.
Addressing attendees during the kickoff ceremony, Engr. Irikefe Eugene Baror, the Zonal Coordinator for Northeast II, reiterated FERMA’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the road network within the hospital premises to ensure safety and convenience for all users.
Engr. Baror elucidated that the fifth phase of the road project at FTH and other areas in the region epitomizes FERMA’s mandate to uphold and enhance federal roads and bridges across the nation.

He emphasized that the project execution would uphold the highest standards of professionalism and accountability, with paramount consideration for the safety of commuters, a factor he underscored as pivotal for the country.
Following the inauguration of the road project at FTH Gombe, the zonal coordinator, alongside Engr. Charles Avishigh, the federal road maintenance engineer, conducted an inspection of the intervention site at Kashere in the Local Government Areas (LGA) of Gombe. They also assessed critical sections prone to washouts and the deteriorated bridge abutment and embankment at the washed-out site in Dadin-Kowa along the Gombe/Biu road, along with a collapsed bridge along the Gombe/Potiskum road.
The coordinator acknowledged the existence of eroded roads within the region and assured prompt remediation of the washed-out roads and bridges that pose risks to commuters.
Expressing gratitude on behalf of FTH Gombe, Chief Medical Director (CMD) Yusuf Mohammed Abdullahi commended FERMA for stepping up to enhance the hospital’s road network. Represented by Prof. Sani Adamu, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), he revealed that FERMA’s interventions have spurred various developmental strides within the hospital.
Meanwhile, Naziru Mustapha, the contractor overseeing the FTH Gombe road project, delineated that the ongoing road construction spans a total of 700 meters of earthwork and 600 meters of newly laid asphalt roadway. This is complemented by a 500-meter drainage infrastructure on both sides and one-meter-wide shoulders, aiming to augment safety and convenience.
According to Mustapha, these comprehensive measures not only underscore the meticulous execution of this project but also its potential to significantly enhance internal mobility within the hospital.
