Fierce Firepower: Troops Repel Boko Haram Attacks in New Marte, Kumshe — Recover VBIED, Neutralize Dozens

In a decisive show of strength, Nigerian troops under Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) repelled coordinated terrorist assaults in New Marte and Kumshe, Borno State, dealing a heavy blow to Boko Haram/ISWAP elements and reclaiming a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) among other weapons.
The foiled attack on New Marte occurred in the early hours of May 27, 2025, when terrorists launched a surprise offensive on military positions. Swift reinforcements from the 24 Task Force Brigade Garrison and the 134 Special Forces Battalion met the threat head-on, engaging in a fierce gun battle that left scores of insurgents dead.
Captain Reuben Kovangiya, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations at the OPHK Theatre Command, confirmed that the air component played a critical role by delivering precision strikes and surveillance support that scattered the enemy and inflicted further casualties.
“Timely aerial intelligence and surgical airstrikes dismantled several fleeing elements, demonstrating the synergy between our ground and air forces,” Kovangiya stated.
Following the encounter, troops recovered an SUV laden with explosives, likely intended for use as a VBIED, and destroyed several motorcycles left behind by retreating militants. Blood trails leading from the scene hinted at more wounded among the attackers who fled.
In a separate but connected engagement at Kumshe, insurgents again tried to overrun a Forward Operating Base but were repelled with superior firepower. Several terrorists were neutralized in the process.
Tragically, two gallant soldiers lost their lives during the confrontations.
Captain Kovangiya emphasized that these operations underscore the unwavering commitment of OPHK forces to deny terrorists any safe haven and restore lasting peace to the Northeast.
“Our troops remain resilient and focused. These successes reflect our dedication to dismantling terrorist networks and enabling the safe return of socio-economic life across affected communities,” he affirmed.
