The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ugochukwu Unachukwu, has called for the collaboration of the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi, and other traditional rulers to help end terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry in the Northeast.
According to a statement released in Maiduguri by the Acting Deputy Director, Public Relations, 7 Division, Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Ajemasu Jingina, the GOC’s visit to the Shehu of Borno was aimed at seeking royal blessings and the support of traditional institutions for ongoing counter-terrorism operations in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states.
During the visit to the Shehu’s palace in Maiduguri, Brigadier General Unachukwu emphasised the vital role of community collaboration with traditional institutions in bringing an end to terrorism and other forms of criminality in the region.
He noted that coordinated efforts among traditional rulers could foster peacebuilding and sustainable development in the region, which has been plagued by over a decade of insurgency.
The GOC also assured the Shehu of the military’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states.
In response, the Shehu of Borno commended the military for its sacrifices and the successes recorded in various operations, particularly in the Sambisa Forest and Lake Chad region.
He recalled that the region had been peaceful until the emergence of Boko Haram insurgents, who launched a deadly attack in July 2009 that claimed the lives of over 150 people in Maiduguri.
“We sincerely appreciate the commitment of the Nigerian Armed Forces for the peace we are now enjoying,” El-Kanemi said.
He offered prayers for the complete eradication of terrorism and kidnapping, not only in Borno but across the entire country. He also pledged the continued support of the Borno Emirate Council in the fight against Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists.
The GOC’s visit underscored the importance of strategic partnerships between the military and traditional rulers in enhancing security and promoting economic growth and development in the region.
