Gombe: EndSARS Protest Stalls Our Dialysis Centre Project, CMD

Patients in Gombe State who are suffering from kidney related ailments will continue to wait for more time for a functional dialysis centre in the state.

This is even in spite of efforts by the state government to construct the centre at its Specialist Hospital and subsequent approval of funds for the purchase of the machines and other gears.

Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital says the take-off of the centre was delayed by the EndSARS protest which subsequently turned violent in Lagos, Abuja and other parts of the country.

He argues that if not for the protest, ‘’the supplier would have delivered and by now we would have tested the machines and services commence.”

With the absence of a functioning dialysis center in the specialist hospital and the lack of adequate machines at the Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH) in Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, Plateau and sometimes Kano states have been the second health center and best options for families of patients in need of dialysis in Gombe.

Sources at the Maternal Newborn Child Health Coalition in Gombe say about 120 patients weelyk travel to Bauchi and other neighboring states for dialysis.

The CMD has however, assured that the tide is about to change, as according to him the state government has prioritised the health sector.

“We have recorded numerous changes in the specialist hospital these include in the area of infrastructures, equipment and manpower which we are also working on improving”, he said.

He explained that in the past few years dialysis was not the only problem in the health facility: “We have been referring patients in need of dialysis to FTH which is not also capable of catering for the need, but, you see even ultra-scan was a service we could not render here.

But today that has changed. We now have six different categories of such machines as well as echocardiography that is a machine that checks the heart.

“We have procured two machines for a start of the dialysis services which would soon commence at the specialist hospital”, Shu’aibu said.
