Gombe: Female police officers donate food items to inmates
Female Police Officers from the Gombe State Police Command, on Friday, donated food items and toiletries to support inmates at the Medium Security. Custodial Centre, Gombe.
Comfort Adamu, the Officer in Charge of Gender, in the Command who led the officers, said the gesture was done annually, visiting, Correctional facilities, orphanages and other less-privileged homes.
Adamu while addressing some of the inmates, urged them to keep hopes alive while encouraging them to embrace the skills acquisition programme at the centre to acquire relevant skills.
She advised the inmates to avoid returning to criminal behaviours, reminding them of the importance of becoming good ambassadors after their release.
While speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), she called on parents and guardians to raise their children with moral guidance to prevent them from ending up in similar situations.
She advised youths not to use poverty and the harsh economic situation as an excuse to commit crimes but to “find something no matter how small to do.
“Life must somehow, with patience favour those who seek God’s face, do the right things and work hard to earn your living,” she said.
Mr Musa Nelson, a Correctional Officer, in charge of industry at the custodial centre, expressed gratitude for the donations, acknowledging the positive impact they would have on the welfare of the inmates.
Nelson said that the inmates were being trained on skills acquisition in line with the mandate of the Nigerian Correctional Service to transform inmates before their release.
He urged stakeholders in the state to intensify efforts at ensuring that youths acquire skills, decrying that majority of the inmates were youths.
“These youths would have used their energy to do something good and steer clear of crimes if they were given skills.
“But today they are here and that’s why we are doing the skill acquisition programme to equip them and make them better persons than they came,” he said.
During the visits, the Police Command’s Chaplain, Mr Paul Danjuma and Imam, Mr Suleiman Nasir encouraged the inmates and prayed for them.
Items donated include garri, groundnut cake (kuli-kuli), soaps, detergents and cream.
