Gombe State Embarks on Multi-Billion Naira Ultramodern Abattoir to Revolutionize Meat, Livestock Sector
The Gombe State Government has commenced the process for the construction of a multibillion-naira ultramodern abattoir, a transformative initiative aimed at overhauling the meat processing and livestock industry across the state.
At the official contract signing ceremony, Professor Usman Bello Abubakar, State Project Coordinator of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project, stated that the facility aligns with Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s strategic plan to modernize the livestock sector one of the major contributors to the state’s economy.
Professor Abubakar emphasized that the project will eliminate outdated, unhygienic, and inefficient methods of transporting and processing livestock, which have long posed public health risks and economic setbacks.
“With this new facility, Gombe is on the path to becoming a leading exporter of hygienically processed meat and meat products both within Nigeria and to the international market,” he noted.
The project, which will be completed within nine months, includes the construction of an automated and world-class abattoir equipped with modern slaughtering, processing, and packaging sections that meet national and global health standards.
Abubakar disclosed that even before construction begins, three renowned international investors have expressed serious interest in collaborating with the project—an indication of its economic potential and investment appeal.
Also speaking at the event, Architect Yunusa Yakubu, Managing Director and CEO of Lubell Nigeria Limited—the contracting firm—commended the Gombe State Government and L-PRES for entrusting the company with such a landmark project.
“As a son of Gombe, this is more than a business deal; it’s a mission of service. We are committed to delivering a facility that reflects excellence and innovation,” Yakubu pledged, assuring that the project would be completed on time and in line with the highest standards.
Following the signing, the project site—located near the Federal College of Education (Technical) along Bajoga Road—was officially handed over by the L-PRES Coordinator, alongside the contractor and the State Surveyor General.
The abattoir will be sited on a 4-hectare parcel within a proposed 41-hectare livestock industrial zone that will also house an international livestock market, a fattening hub, and a tannery/leather processing facility.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Gombe State Butchers Association, Alhaji Sulaiman Umar, lauded the state government’s bold move, stating that the project would enhance meat quality, open up international trade opportunities, and significantly uplift the livelihoods of butchers and livestock traders.
“This ultramodern abattoir will not only raise health and hygiene standards but will also spur economic development and job creation across the value chain,” he concluded.
