Gombe Tackles Water Crisis, Sanitation with 300 Solar Boreholes, Public Toilets
In a bold move to combat water scarcity and improve public hygiene, the Gombe State Government has awarded contracts for the construction of over 300 hybrid solar-powered boreholes across the state.
The programme coordinator of Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene (SURWASH), Engr. Aliyu Usman, during a media briefing in Gombe.
According to Engr. Usman, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has also approved additional projects for the construction of public toilets in all eleven local government areas.
“These facilities are targeted at motor parks and busy marketplaces to curb the menace of open defecation and promote safer sanitation practices.
“These solar-powered boreholes are designed to ensure a steady water supply, particularly in underserved rural communities where access to clean water has been a persistent challenge,” Usman stated.
He noted that the boreholes, fitted with solar panels, would provide reliable, eco-friendly water access, while the public toilet initiative aims to enhance hygiene and reduce environmental health risks.
Engr. Usman reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to strengthening water and sanitation infrastructure, stressing that the successful execution of these projects would significantly boost public health and spur community development.
“This is more than just infrastructure; it’s about improving lives and ensuring dignity for all residents of Gombe,” he added.
The twin projects underscore Gombe State’s dedication to achieving sustainable development goals related to clean water and sanitation, setting an example for other regions grappling with similar challenges.
