GONET Urges Global Aid as Devastating Floods Ravage Maiduguri
In a heartfelt statement, the Gombe Network of Civil Society (GONET) has extended deep condolences to the people of Maiduguri and Borno State in the wake of catastrophic floods that have wreaked havoc in the state capital.
This was contained in a press statement signed by the GONET Chairman Ibrahim Yusuf, made available to newsmen in Gombe.
He highlighted the widespread destruction of homes, critical infrastructure, and the displacement of numerous families as a result of the collapse of water channels connected to the Alau Dam.
The devastating floods have left communities stranded, with key areas such as the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the Shehu of Borno’s Palace, and residential neighbourhoods submerged under water.
Gonet expressed deep concern for the affected families and called for immediate international support to provide essential relief supplies.
“The scale of this disaster exceeds local capacity,” the statement read.
“We appeal to global humanitarian agencies, international organisations, and donor partners to prioritise urgent assistance, including food, clean water, medicine, clothing, and temporary shelters for the displaced.”
While commending local authorities and volunteers for their tireless efforts, GONET emphasised the need for a more coordinated international response, urging organisations like the United Nations and the International Red Cross to step in.
The group remains hopeful that swift action will help alleviate the suffering and restore hope to the people of Maiduguri and surrounding areas.
As Borno State grapples with the aftermath of the floods, GONET continues to stand in solidarity with those affected, calling for prayers, aid, and action in these difficult times.
