Governor Inuwa Yahaya Consoles Billiri Community, Donates N10m to Bereaved Families
In a display of empathy and leadership, Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has paid a heartfelt condolence visit to Billiri Local Government Area following the tragic accident that claimed five lives and injured several others during an Easter procession.
Addressing mourners at the palace of the Mai Tangle, Dr Danladi Sanusi Maiyamba, the Governor extended his deepest sympathies to the families of the victims and the entire Tangale Chiefdom, describing the incident as “deeply saddening and a reminder of life’s fragility”.
On behalf of the government and people of Gombe State, Governor Inuwa Yahaya prayed for the repose of the departed souls and swift recovery for the injured. In a gesture of compassion, he announced a donation of two million naira to each of the five affected families, totalling ten million naira, and pledged to foot the medical bills of those hospitalised.
“No right-thinking individual would ever wish such a tragedy upon others,” the Governor stated. “This is a moment that compels reflection on the ultimate will of the Almighty, which we must accept with humility.”
Governor Yahaya noted that this was the third incident of its kind linked to festive celebrations, urging security agencies and community leaders to adopt more effective preventive measures. He also cautioned against lawlessness, warning that security agencies will deal decisively with any attempts to take the law into one’s hands.
Responding to a plea from the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Gombe State, Rev. Father Alphonsus Shinga, the Governor directed the Commissioner of Police to expedite the review and release of those detained in connection with the incident.
Governor Yahaya reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to upholding peace, security, and justice for all residents, regardless of faith or ethnicity. He also encouraged religious and community leaders to always collaborate with relevant authorities when organising public processions.
In his remarks, Rev. Shinga expressed gratitude for the Governor’s swift action and compassionate support, reaffirming the Christian community’s resolve to maintain peace.
The Mai Tangle, Dr. Danladi Sanusi Maiyamba, echoed similar sentiments, commending the government’s quick intervention, which he said helped calm tensions and avert potential unrest.
Representing the grieving families, Bakari Bawasa thanked the Governor for his compassion and generosity, while the chairperson of Billiri LGA, Hon. Eglah Idris, praised the Governor’s leadership, calling his visit “a balm of comfort in our time of grief”.
The visit underscored the Governor’s enduring commitment to unity, peace, and responsive governance in Gombe State.
