International Day Against Drug Abuse: Shehu of Borno, NDLEA fight against drug abuse, trafficking

The Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemik, has collaborated with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in fighting drug abuse and illicit trafficking in Borno.
Leading a high-powered delegation of the United Nations to mark this year’s International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Maiduguri, the Borno state NDLEA Commandant, Iliyasu Mani, stated, “This year’s drug abuse fight focuses on the roles of traditional rulers and grassroots partnership.
He said that the continuous drug abuse among youths poses threats to their lives and mental health.
Highlighting the agency’s integrated strategies, he said, “Our advocacy focuses on public sensitisation, rehabilitation programmes, and the rigorous enforcement operations in the various communities.
The Commandant called for an effective collaboration among traditional institutions, security agencies, civil society organisations (CSOs) and the international partners in combating drug abuse and illicit trafficking in the state and the country.
Responding, the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemi, commended the efforts of the NDLEA and its partners for emphasising the critical roles of traditional rulers by promoting public awareness and preventive education on drug abuse and trafficking.
El-Kanemi pledged with the continuous support of traditional institutions in the sensitisation of the public, targeting the youths on the dangers of illicit drug use and trafficking.
The monarch further revealed, “Imbibing cultural values, moral upbringing and community engagements are the critical means to prevent the spread of menace among the youths in the state.
