ISWAP kills 2 policemen, 1 soldier during clearance Operation in Abadam
At least two Mobile Police Men and one soldier were killed when the troops came under heavy attack while conducting clearance Operation in Malam Fatori town in Abadam Local Government of Borno State.
This came nearly three days after Borno Governor Babagana Zulum, abruptly cut short his visit to the town following an attack on his team by the Islamic State of the West African Province(ISWAP).
An Intelligence Officer disclosed that the team headed by one Chief Superintendent of Police(CSP), Mohammed Ibrahim, Commander of the Borno CRACK Team
came under heavy attack in the early hours of Wednesday while they were conducting clearance Operations.
The clearance exercise was organised by Borno Governor Babagana Zulum, after he mobilised about 500 security personnel, to facilitate the return of over 50,000 households who fled from Abadam and were now taking refuge in Bosso, Niger Republic.
The officer said that the terrorists attacked the town with several trucks mounted with Anti Air Craft guns and motorcycles.
The officer explained that the combined efforts of the policemen comprising of the riot, Crack, Civilian Joint Task Force(CJTF) Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp’s(NSCDC), personnel, operatives of the Department of State Services and soldiers, helped in repelling the terrorists attack.
“The gallant role exhibited by the Crack team helped in pushing back the terrorists.
“Unfortunately, we lost two of our MOPOL and one soldier during the gun battle with the terrorists which lasted for about one hour,” he added.
Malam-Fatori is the headquarters of Abadam local government of Borno, known to be the stronghold of the ISWAP Terrorists and home of the ISWAP leaders as well as the Shura Council.
Troops of Operation Hadin Kai had suffered several attacks and shelling by the insurgents in recent weeks.
However, despite the growing insecurity and presence of the terrorists in the area, Governor Zulum has insisted that all the IDPs and refugees must be resettled by December 31, 2021.
