Borno Deputy Governor Umar Usman Kadafur has inaugurated a state-of-the-art general hospital for healthcare delivery services in the Biu Local Council Area.
The completed phase two hospital was equipped by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to boost health delivery services to the people in the state.
Kadafur, who represented Governor Babagana Zulum in the inauguration of the supported hospital, said, “Today’s inauguration marks a significant milestone in the affordable delivery of healthcare services in Biu, comprising several communities.
The Commissioner of Health and Human Services, Prof. Baba Mallam Gana, said that the state government has prioritised the health sector by building and equipping hospitals with modern health facilities and other diagnostic disease machines across the state.
“The inaugurated health facility in southern Borno is fully equipped with modern medical facilities.”
This represents the second phase of completing a crucial healthcare infrastructure upgrade in Biu township.
The commissioner noted that with the increasing population in the community, the hospital could meet people’s healthcare needs, particularly in the fight against polio, malaria, meningitis, cholera, and measles that outbreaks during hot and dry seasons of the year.
He said that a similar hospital project is to commence in Monguno, the north senatorial district headquarters, stating that WHO will continue to support the government to achieve its Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030.
He, therefore, assured that the installed hospital facility will be judiciously utilized to strengthen the healthcare delivery system in the state.
The WHO Country Representative to Nigeria, Dr. Walter Kazadi Mulombo, commended the state government’s approach, stating, “Our appreciation is for believing in us and giving us the opportunity to support the healthcare needs of the people,” pledging continued support and collaboration in fighting the various diseases in communities.
The Chief Medical Director, Borno State Hospital Management Board, Prof. Abubakar Kullima, urged other development partners to emulate WHO.
While thanking the state government and WHO, the emir of Biu, represented by the Birma of Biu, Ibrahim Shehu Birma, said that the hospital brings to three the number of inaugurated health facilities, including an eye and dental hospital inaugurated by Governor Zulum in 1925.
