In a major stride toward rebuilding livelihoods and boosting economic self-reliance, Borno Central Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, on Wednesday, empowered 3,092 constituents with pick-up vans, tricycles, and various work tools, as part of a second-phase empowerment initiative flagged off by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum in Maiduguri.
The empowerment package targeting women and youths across the eight local government areas of Borno Central featured a wide range of materials, including 2,954 mini trucks, tricycles, sewing and grinding machines, deep freezers, solar-powered water pumps, fertilisers, and knapsack sprayers. The goal is to support beneficiaries in dry-season farming and small-scale enterprises, especially in communities recovering from insurgency.
“Today marks a significant milestone in restoring dignity and livelihoods to our people,” Governor Zulum declared. “I commend Senator Lawan not just for his grassroots interventions but for his stellar performance at the National Assembly.”
Beyond material empowerment, 500 individuals also received ₦100,000 each in cash to boost their economic activities, while every beneficiary of the distributed items was given ₦20,000 in transport support to aid movement back to their communities.
Senator Lawan, speaking during the ceremony, reiterated his commitment to sustainable development and urged recipients to deploy the equipment for productive ventures. “This is not just a donation; it is an investment in the future of our communities,” he said.
Further showcasing his contribution to the education sector, Lawan donated 450 school desks to be shared across public schools in the district.
The event attracted key political stakeholders, including APC State Chairman Alhaji Bello Ayuba, who cautioned beneficiaries against selling the items, and APC Deputy National Chairman (North) Ali Bukar Dalori, who lauded the initiative as a timely intervention that complements the government’s post-conflict reconstruction and poverty alleviation programs.
Also in attendance was Hon. Abdulkadir Rahis, member representing the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, who praised Lawan’s dedication to the democratic dividends and his far-reaching legislative accomplishments, including bills for the establishment of a Federal University of Entrepreneurship and Agriculture in Bama and a Federal Medical Centre in Borno.
As the crowd dispersed, many beneficiaries expressed gratitude, with hopes that the tools received would mark the beginning of renewed economic stability in their war-torn communities.
