In the wake of the devastating floods that ravaged Maiduguri, former Chief of Army Staff and former Nigerian Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai, sprang into action, leading a humanitarian mission to support the victims and demonstrate solidarity with the state government.
During a courtesy call on Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, Ambassador Buratai praised the government’s swift response to the disaster and offered prayers for the victims to find strength in their time of need. He emphasized the importance of residents taking proactive measures to mitigate similar disasters in the future.
Governor Zulum expressed gratitude to General Buratai for his gesture and pledged to utilize the donations judiciously. He acknowledged Buratai’s unwavering support, which dates back to his tenure as Chief of Army Staff and continues even in his capacity as a private citizen.
The TY Buratai Humanity Care and Tukur and Tukur Foundations provided medical relief, food, and palliatives to affected individuals. Medical care included treatment for malaria, nutritional support, and ear, nose, and throat (ENT) care, as well as free drugs for diabetes patients.
General Buratai stressed the importance of collective support, stating, “Such efforts should not be left to the state government alone. Individuals and organizations should come out and support.” His team also visited the Shehu of Borno’s Palace, which was affected by the flood, to commiserate with the traditional ruler and offer prayers.
The recent floods in Maiduguri have affected over 239,000 people, with an unconfirmed number of deaths and injuries reported. The disaster has also damaged critical infrastructure, including bridges, and disrupted access to hospitals, schools, and markets.
The Borno State Government has appealed for humanitarian support, and the UN and partners are working together to provide emergency assistance, including food, shelter, and healthcare services.
