Mailantarki Makes Bold Move to PDP, Vows to Unseat Gombe’s APC Government
By Auwal Ahmad, Gombe
In a notable political shift, Honorable Khamisu Mailantarki, the 2023 governorship candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Gombe State, officially joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday.
This decision marks a significant step in the PDP’s efforts to strengthen its position ahead of the 2027 elections, with Mailantarki pledging to play an active role in revitalizing the party.
Mailantarki’s move to the PDP follows his resignation from NNPP in July, leaving many speculating about his next steps.
Addressing supporters at the PDP secretariat in Gombe, Mailantarki cited dissatisfaction with the current All Progressives Congress (APC) administration as a motivating factor in his decision.
He expressed confidence that the PDP stands as the only viable alternative to bring about change in Gombe, accusing the APC of failing to deliver on promises at both federal and state levels.
“The APC government has fallen short on its commitments, and it’s time for a new chapter in Gombe,” Mailantarki stated. He further criticized Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s administration, pointing to what he described as
“uncompassionate policies” that include revoking land titles and enforcing rigorous daily biometric check-ins for civil servants, reportedly with pay consequences for non-compliance.
“It’s unfair to demand that workers report five times a day amid the current economic hardship without sufficient compensation,” Mailantarki argued, condemning the policy’s impact on struggling civil servants.
In a show of unity, PDP Chairman Abnor Kwaskebe welcomed Mailantarki to the party, describing the defection as a significant victory for the PDP in Gombe State. Kwaskebe reassured supporters of the party’s commitment to fair opportunities for all members, especially as they gear up for future elections.
Mailantarki’s arrival has bolstered the PDP’s ranks, setting the stage for what may become a pivotal contest with the APC in the 2027 gubernatorial race.
The shift reflects growing momentum within the PDP as it seeks to consolidate opposition against the ruling party in Gombe and address pressing economic and social concerns facing the state.
