National Grid Collapse Threatens Gains of Band A Electricity Supply – Olajide Abiola
Olajide Abiola, Chairman of Gidanka and seasoned business executive, has highlighted a critical flaw in the Band A electricity supply system. According to Abiola, frequent national grid collapses negate the savings achieved through reduced diesel consumption.
The Band A electricity supply provides 20-24 hours of power, resulting in significant diesel savings for consumers. However, a 48-hour national grid collapse can wipe out these gains entirely. With customers already accepting high tariffs of N200+ per kilowatt-hour (kWh), extended outages undermine the benefits of reliable power supply.
Abiola emphasized the need for compensation mechanisms to mitigate the impact of grid collapses. He called on the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to intervene and address this issue.
“The frequency and duration of grid collapses severely affect the economics of the Band A supply. NERC must ensure that consumers are protected and compensated for these disruptions,” Abiola stated.
