The Northeast Zonal Director of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), Major General Abubakar Adamu (rtd), has tasked members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to shun the processions and use of small arms and dangerous weapons in communities of the country.
Accordingly, their shunning of weapons was to prevent individual or group processions of arms and light weapons in the society.
Addressing the 2025 Batch B Stream I corps members on Thursday in Maiduguri, the Director said, “I charged all of you to prevent the processions and use of the small arms and other dangerous weapons while serving in your primary assignments in the various communities of Nigeria.”
Speaking on the significance of the Centre, Adamu stated, “Your shunning of small arms, dangerous weapons, and the use of illicit drugs will promote peace and unity, as well as make you good ambassadors of the country and anywhere you have served in the country.
“Other objectives of the Centre included institutionalising small arms and light weapons control at all levels of polity, mainstreaming illicit small arms and light weapons eradication efforts in the national discourse, and addressing small arms and light weapons problems.
Beyond the checks against the processions of small arms and other dangerous weapons, the Director added, “We’re mandated to lead a multi-stakeholder process by engaging Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and the civil society organisations in the implementation of the national Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the UN plans of action.
According to him, the joint action is on the mop-ups and control of small arms and light weapons in the West Africa subregion.
He also reiterated the core values of accountability, integrity, professionalism, and transparency in the fight against the possession and use of small arms and other dangerous weapons in society.
He noted that the centre’s objectives align with the ECOWAS and UN Conventions and Protocols on the eradication of illicit small arms and light weapons.
The NYSC State Coordinator, Naziru Bello, assured Adamu that the corps members will embody the culture of decency, peace, unity, and the stability of the country.
The Coordinator further revealed, “The about 1,000 corps members will effectively disseminate the messages on the illicit small arms and dangerous weapons by being ambassadors of the nation.
