The North East Development Commission (NEDC) is constructing 500 houses for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to bridge the housing deficits in Bauchi State.

The 12-year Boko Haram insurgency killed over 36.000 people with destruction of property worth $9.2 billion (N3.42 trillion) in the Northeast.

While laying the foundation stone Thursday at Dungal village; along Bauchi/Jos road, Governor Bala Mohammed disclosed that the new housing project will bridge the deficits in shelter for rural and urban dwellers.

“I applaud the Commission for coming to our aid to bridge the housing deficit in the state,” he said.

He noted that the 500 houses will complement the ongoing construction of 2, 500 housing units through collaboration with the Federal Government.

According to him; “We’re doing everything possible to make sure that we get affordable and decent accommodation for our people,” stating that NEDC’s interventions could reduce people’s homelessness, including the IDPs.

He said that civil servants will be accorded priority in the allocation of houses to improve service delivery to the people.

The Governor therefore; assured that the housing estates will be provided with social amenities, including schools, markets, police stations and fire service.
