…Combat Climate Change, Cut Carbon Emissions

In an effort to mitigate climate change and reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere, the North East Development Commission (NEDC) is to distribute 10,000 electric vehicles in the region.
NEDC Managing Director, Mohammed Alkali, stated this while unveiling the distribution of e-vehicles on Wednesday at a stakeholder meeting in Maiduguri, Borno State.
He said that the electric vehicles would be given to members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the National Association of Transport Owners (NATO) in Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe.
The Managing Director, however, said that the distribution of the e-vehicles by the commission is to be in two phases of 5, 000 to 5,000.
He further disclosed that recharging points would be established in the six states to ensure free flow of traffic.
Additionally, five to 10 megawatts of solar power are also to be sited along the major roads in the region.
On the training of drivers and transport owners, the NEDC boss said: “All the drivers of e-vehicles and transport owners are to be trained on maintenance and operational management of the distributed e-vehicles.”
In their response to the ownership of e-vehicles, most of the leadership’s of the transport association applauded the commission’s initiatives to mitigate climate change in the Northeast.
