The Yobe State Chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has gifted relief materials to 700 children of its deceased members in the 17 local government areas of the state.
According to the Union, the relief materials initiative was to support the well-being and development of the orphans in their respective communities in the state.
Presenting the gifted relief materials for distribution yesterday in Damaturu, NURTW State Chairman Karumi Alhaji Goni revealed that the initiative underscores the union’s commitment to supporting its members and their families during economic hardships amid high costs of living.
He urged federal and state governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and philanthropists to assist the vulnerable groups, particularly orphans who could secure their future amid the economic hardships in the country.
While distributing the materials, the State Coordinator of the Yobe First Movement (YFM), Sadiq Mohammed, said, “The donated relief materials and N100,000 have brought hope and comfort to those affected by the loss of their loved ones.”
He added that YFM was able to present the materials and cash for distribution to the families of deceased members of NURTW in the state.
He said that the gifted materials and cash comprise 400 pieces of women’s wrappers, 100 pieces of shaddah clothes and N100,000 transport fares for the orphans to their local council areas.
Speaking on behalf of the orphans, Fatima Usman of the Nayi-Nawa community expressed gratitude to the union, stating that the relief materials would significantly alleviate their economic hardships amid high costs of living.
