Police arrest 14 suspects for murder, five others in Borno
The Borno State police command has arrested 14 suspects for murder, vandalism, theft and drug peddling in four local government councils of the state.
The suspects comprising youths between the age of 18 and 25, were arrested this month during a police patrol of Maiduguri metropolis.
Parading the suspects, in Maiduguri, the State Commissioner of Police, Yusufu Lawal, stated that “On July 7, 2024, at 4:00pm, Adamu Yakubu of Papa Gusi village in Kwaya/Kusar council reported to the police station that his son, Usakahyel Adamu hit his grandfather, Yakubu Ibrahim, 90, with a hoe on the head.”
The police boss said that the attack resulted into sustenance of serious injuries and died on the spot.
According to him, investigations further revealed that Usakahyel had an altercation with his grandfather.
He explained that the altercation was on the allegation that Yakubu was insulting the grandson without any cause.
Besides the arrest, he added that the hoe has been recovered and registered as an exhibit, while the suspect will be charged to the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice and prosecution.
In a separate culpable homicide, Lawal further disclosed that Lydia Aji and her husband had a fight with an axe on July 4, 2024 in Chibok Local Government Area.
Continuing; he said: “Investigation also revealed that the couples had a misunderstanding over their daughter, Rachael Aji, 13, who stole a goat and sold it to an unknown person,” stating that the angry father asked them to leave his house.
Lawal noted that the case is still being investigated before prosecuting the suspects in the court of law.
The other 11 suspects, were arrested for drug peddling and abuse, theft of solar panels and inverters, and submersible pump valued at N80. 000.
“We remain committed in ensuring the safety and security of people’s lives and property,” he said, warning that the criminals are to desist from their nefarious activities in the state.
He, therefore, urged members of the public to be vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities in communities.
