Ramaphosa Rallies for Inclusive Growth and Worker Empowerment
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has emphasised the importance of prioritising inclusive economic growth and job creation while reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding workers’ rights and expanding their opportunities.
In his weekly message to the nation, the president urged South Africans to build upon past victories in labour reforms by working together to open doors for all citizens.
“As we focus on growing the economy and creating jobs, we must ensure every worker feels the impact of progress in their daily lives,” he stated.
Recalling the injustices faced by black workers during apartheid, Ramaphosa reflected on the legacy of exclusion and denied union rights. While acknowledging improvements through employment equity policies, he stressed that significant efforts are still needed to reshape ownership and leadership structures in the economy.
Ramaphosa revealed that as part of South Africa’s presidency of the G20, the government has engaged with global labour organisations, including the International Trade Union Confederation, to reinforce workers’ rights and ensure their protection is both meaningful and effective.
“Our labour laws remain powerful tools for correcting the past,” he said, “but they must also deliver real change in the present.”
He further urged businesses to move beyond mere legal compliance by embracing the full intent of labour legislation, actively promoting diversity, inclusion, and empowerment in the workplace.
Ramaphosa called for greater representation of marginalised groups, especially women, young people, and persons with disabilities, in economic leadership and decision-making roles, aligning with the vision of a more equitable South Africa.
