Red Cross sensitizes school girls on personal hygiene in Taraba
The Taraba State branch of the Nigerian Red Cross Society has carried out sensitization sessions to the Government Science Technical College (Best Centre) and the Kenneth Foundation.
The program was an all-girls exclusive program in commemoration of the International women’s Day that was celebrated on the 8th of March. The theme of the Sensitization was ‘We Choose to Challenge: upholding a positive self-image as a woman of Influence’.
The session had a personal hygiene promotion as part of the packages the girls enjoyed, where female students whose classes ranged from junior to senior secondary classes were taught on how to use sanitary pads and towels properly as well as the importance of personal hygiene.
It was also established that lack of personal hygiene was one of the many causes and ways that girls developed low self-esteem.
The Coordinator of the NRCS mother’s club Taraba Branch, Mrs Halima Yakubu who lead the team while presenting a hand wash station to the schools addressed the female Staff, students and principal of the College said that the Sensitization was seen as an opportunity and awake up call to challenge the girl child that the entire world is waiting for her emergence.

According to her, the earlier notion that girls are just meant only for the kitchen is gradually fading away as women are doing great and amazing things and still keep the home together.
Mrs. Halima Yakubu sighted the likes of Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, Ibukun Awoshika who are mothers and as well are reverd women doing great things in our society.
While appreciating the impact the Red Cross has made and continue to make in the lives of women and the most vulnerable in the society, Hajia Zainab Gidado the principal of the Government science Technical college, believed that with what the girls have heard during the sensitization it will go a long way to inspire them to become the best they can be.
