Regional Leaders Unite in Maiduguri for 15th Lake Chad Basin Forum as
Yobe State Finalizes Preparations

The Secretary to the Yobe State Government, Alhaji Baba Mallam Wali, has reaffirmed the state’s commitment to hosting the 5th Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum, set to begin on January 27, 2025, at the Muhammadu Indimi International Learning Center, University of Maiduguri.
Speaking during a pre-forum press briefing, at Alh Muhammadu Indimi International Centre ft Distance Learning, University of Maiduguri, Alhaji Wali, who also chairs the Local Organizing Committee, emphasized the forum’s importance in addressing the challenges facing the Lake Chad Basin. He described it as a platform to foster regional cooperation and sustainable development while promoting stabilization and recovery efforts across the region.
He outlined the preparations made to ensure the forum’s success, including comprehensive security measures, logistics, and health services. According to him, venues and accommodations have been prepared to meet international standards, while robust security plans are in place for all participants. In addition, health facilities and emergency services have been arranged for the duration of the event.
Themed “Rebuilding the Lake Chad Basin: Consolidating Gains, Commitment to Peace, Cross-Border Cooperation, Security, and Sustainable Development for a Resilient Community”, the three-day forum will bring together governors, policymakers, and development partners. Discussions will focus on critical areas such as food security, climate resilience, reintegration of displaced populations, and strategies for regional economic recovery.
The forum will also highlight Nigeria’s leadership role in regional stabilization through initiatives such as the Regional Strategy for Stabilization, Recovery, and Resilience (RS-SRR). Alhaji Wali called on stakeholders, including governments, civil society, and the private sector, to renew their commitment to advancing peace and development in the region.
He expressed gratitude to key partners, including the Federal Government, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State, and international agencies, for their support in making the forum a reality.
The event will conclude with a communiqué outlining actionable strategies for a peaceful and resilient Lake Chad Basin.
