Revival of Sports in Bauchi State: Government Trains Stakeholders to Boost Local Talent
Bauchi State is set to reinvigorate its sporting heritage with a bold initiative aimed at reviving the long-dormant sports festival.
The state government recently concluded a comprehensive training programme for 100 local sports officers, coaches, referees, and organising secretaries.
This move signals a proactive step towards harnessing local talent and fostering community engagement through sports.
Mr. Mohammed Salis, Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, stated this while speaking during the three-day training exercise in Bauchi.
“Bauchi state is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, along a deep-seated passion for sports,” stated Salis, emphasising the strategic importance of the initiative.
Representing the commissioner, Nasiru Usman, Permanent Secretary in the ministry, underscored the significance of the refresher course in sports development.
“The training will enable our stakeholders to explore new talents effectively, enhancing sport development across the state,” he affirmed.
The initiative has garnered support from various quarters, including Mr. Ibrahim Kashim, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), who lauded stakeholders for their contributions.
Speaking through his representative, Hashimu Kumbala, Kashim highlighted the broader societal benefits of sports festivals. “Beyond mere competition, sports festivals serve as vital platforms for talent discovery, social enrichment, and unity,” he remarked.
Reflecting on Bauchi State’s sporting history, Mr. Usman Danbala, Director of the Bauchi State Sports Council, lamented the prolonged absence of sports festivals over the past four decades.
He commended the state government for prioritising capacity building among sports stakeholders, which is crucial for the successful revival of grassroots sporting events.
“In the realm of sports, staying updated with the latest trends, rules, and technologies is paramount,” noted Danbala, stressing the role of continuous education in effective sports management.
The concerted efforts of the Bauchi State government underscore its commitment to leveraging sports as a catalyst for community cohesion and youth empowerment. With renewed enthusiasm and enhanced skills among local sports officers and coaches, Bauchi State is poised to reclaim its position on the regional sporting map, promising a brighter future for sports enthusiasts and aspiring athletes alike.
