Senate Urges Federal Government to Set Up Military Base in Hong to Combat Boko Haram Revival
The Nigerian Senate has unanimously called on the Federal Government to establish a military base in Hong Local Government Area, Adamawa State, to stem the recent surge of Boko Haram attacks in the North-East region.
This directive came following a motion presented by Senator Aminu Abbas (PDP-Adamawa) and backed by all senators representing the North-East during Wednesday’s plenary session in Abuja.
The motion, titled “Addressing the Resurgence of Boko Haram Activities in Hong, Gombi, and Other Northeast Areas,” commended the commendable efforts of security forces while stressing the urgent need for enhanced military presence in Hong LGA to reinforce existing troops.
The Senate also mandated the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to deliver humanitarian aid to communities affected by insurgency, aiming to alleviate the suffering of thousands left displaced and homeless due to repeated Boko Haram attacks.
Senator Abbas highlighted the devastating impact of the insurgency on local economies, emphasizing that residents are now too afraid to farm or engage in trade, further crippling the region’s development.
Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Monguno praised the military’s dedication and President Bola Tinubu’s political support, which previously helped regain control over Boko Haram-held territories in Borno and Yobe. However, Monguno expressed concern over the recent wave of attacks, including assaults on military bases and theft of equipment.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio underscored the need for constant vigilance, warning that Boko Haram exploits moments of perceived military relaxation to launch surprise attacks. He also noted the challenges posed by porous borders, allowing insurgents to infiltrate communities despite cross-border pursuits.
The Senate’s call reflects a united stance toward strengthening security infrastructure and humanitarian support in one of Nigeria’s most vulnerable regions amid ongoing efforts to defeat insurgency.
