Taraba: Group Flags Off 5 Million Tree Planting Campaign
A-five million tree-planting campaign has been flagged off in Ardokola Local Government Area of Taraba State by the state!s Madrid and Timber Buyers Association
The event took place at Bakin Dutse community with dignitaries in attendance.
Speaking, the Minister of Environment, Muhammed Mahmood represented by an Assistant Director in the ministry, Bose Olukianni described the initiative as timely.
According to the minister, there was an urgent need to confront the diverse and severe impact of environmental degradation that has continued to ravage the global community.
Mahmood congratulated the association and the state ministry of environment for the laudable initiative aimed at making the world a better place to live in.
Tree planting, the minister goes on, has become a matter of necessity and all should embrace it as it serves as immediate panacea for the daunting environmental and climate change challenges.
Commissioner for Environment, Ibrahim Lawal urges the association to adhere to their pledged to plant five million trees in five years.
He said the ministry is going to supervise the project to ensure its success.
Chairman of the group, Josiah Magaji says the initiative came from the desire to give back to nature what they have taken, adding that the future generations will also benefit from it.
He explains that the planting of the trees preceeded the flag off ceremony as some trees were planted earlier in August .
He also informed that one million trees will be planted each year for a period of five years.
Chairman of Ardokola local Council, Salihu Dovo and the state CAN Chairman, Reverend Isaiah Magaji Jirapye commended the association for championing the course of afforestation.
They urged the association to sustain the gesture and monitor the trees planted to grow.
The occasion featured commissioning of an office block of the association to be used for raising the nursery.
