Tragedy in Billiri: Gombe Civil Societies Mourn Easter Procession Victims, Demand Safety Overhaul
The Gombe Network of Civil Societies (GONET) has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic accident that marred the Easter procession in Billiri Local Government Area, Gombe State, leading to the loss of lives and multiple injuries.
In a press statement made available to journalists in Gombe and signed by GONET Chairman, Ibrahim Yusuf, the network conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the Billiri community, and all affected residents across the state.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims. We pray for the peaceful repose of the departed souls and a speedy recovery for those injured in the unfortunate incident.
Describing the incident as a painful wake-up call, GONET emphasised the urgent need for strict safety compliance and effective regulation, especially during religious and community events involving road movement.
The network urged the Drivers’ Association, Motor Unions, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) to step up public safety campaigns and ensure total compliance with road safety standards to prevent similar tragedies.
GONET also called on the Gombe State Government to launch an immediate and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. It stressed that any individual or group found to have acted negligently must be held accountable.
“Justice must be served, and lessons must be learned. Accountability is crucial, not just for the sake of the grieving families, but to prevent future occurrences,” Yusuf added.
As a platform committed to advocacy and the protection of human life, GONET reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Billiri and pledged to support efforts aimed at strengthening road safety awareness and emergency preparedness across all local government areas in the state.
“May God comfort the families, and may this tragedy spur us all to work together for a safer, more responsive society.
