Zulum approves N850m for rehabilitation, upgrade of boreholes in Borno flood-affected communities
By Tada Jutha, Maiduguri
The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, has approved ₦850 million for the rehabilitation and upgrade of water supply facilities destroyed in the flood-affected Maiduguri metropolis and its environs.
According to him, the approvals are for the procurements of pumps, water supply accessories, and other spare parts for the dozens of solar-powered boreholes.
The development is part of measures by Zulum in addressing the acute scarcity of potable water caused by the last September flood disasters in Maiduguri and Jere Local Council of the state.
Zulum, represented by the General Manager of the State’s Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), Dr. Mohammed Aliyu, on Sunday, in Maiduguri, revealed that the rehabilitation of boreholes was to enable communities to have access to potable water.
He further disclosed that the contractors supplying the boreholes’ accessories have delivered them to the project sites.
Aliyu also announced that new water supply facilities are to be established in Zarmari, Shaukari, Gubio, Gajiram, Gajigana, Kaleri, and Mafa communities.
Besides the rehabilitation and drilling of new boreholes, the GM stated, “The agency has also set up a rapid response team, tasked with inspecting and repairing faulty water supply facilities in the flood-affected communities.”
The water supply task taskforce is expected to complete its assessment in two weeks, in collaboration with professionals in the Ministry of Water Resources and development partners in the water supply and sanitation sectors.
Other completed water projects are sited at Chibok, Azare, Moramti, and Pulka, a populous border community with Cameroon.
