Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has approved scholarships for female indigents that score 250 and above points in the 2025 Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examinations.
The approved scholarships were announced on Saturday while inaugurating the new executive members of the Borno State chapter of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) at the Government House, Maiduguri.
The approvals included a scholarship programme for 12 female students coordinated by the wife of the governor, Dr. Falmata Babagana Zulum.
Inaugurating the APWEN executives in Maiduguri, he revealed that the targeting of female scholars was to encourage girl-child education in the state, stating, “Henceforth, all female indigents of the state that scored 250 and above points in the JAMB examinations would be sponsored by the state government to study technical/vocational education or sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).”
He, therefore, directed the acting Chief of Staff, the State’s Scholarship Board Secretary, the Ministry of Education, and the Maiduguri chapter of APWEN to identify and screen those that met the criteria of the scholarship awards.
In a paper presented by Dr. Habiba Babagana Zulum, titled “The Role of Mentorship in Encouraging Girls to Pursue Engineering Careers in Nigeria,” it was to inspire role modelling in breaking stereotypes and guidance to build the confidence and skills of women in the country.
She noted that STEM has been a beacon of women’s hope by paving paths to brighter future generations in Borno State.
Other highlights of the event included the inauguration of the 4th APWEN Chairperson, Engr. Hajju Tijjani Gazali, and the awards of N200,000 scholarships to the best six female pupils of Wulari Primary School, Maiduguri, and N300,000 scholarships to the best six science students at the Federal Government College (FGC), Monguno.
