Akko Emirate in Gombe State collaborates with police to fight crime
Akko Emirate Council in Gombe State says it is collaborating with the police to tackle insecurity and other crimes in the area.
Alhaji Umar Atiku, Emir of Akko told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe on Thursday that the crime rate heightened at the emirate in the recent past.
He said the trend compelled the Police Community Relations Committee in the emirate to develop templates for community policing to protect the neighbourhoods.
“The emirate engaged 40 youths who were handed to the Divisional Police Office, Kumo in Akko for six months training.
“After the training, the youths were deployed to some flashpoints to assist police operatives in combating crimes,’’ he said.
The emir said that the engaged youths had been receiving N5,000 as monthly stipends and that they are happy to serve their communities positively.
He noted that the crime rate had reduced in the neighbourhoods since the engagement of the youths who were capable of identifying perpetrators of crime.
Alhaji Atiku also told NAN that the committee had identified 20 accesses into Kumo Town, headquarters of Akko Local Government Area and would erect small gates there to check the influx of strange elements.
“Once it is 11 p.m., all the gates will be locked. We want to ensure the safety of our town,’’ the emir stressed. (NAN)
