Bauchi Trains 150 Farmers on Backyard Gardening for Food Security
The Bauchi State Government has trained 150 farmers in backyard gardening to boost perishable crop cultivation and enhance food security.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Aliyu Gital, announced this on Monday during the launch of the training program in Bauchi.
The initiative, implemented in collaboration with the National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANT) and the Bauchi State Agricultural Development Program (BSADP), aims to promote sustainable food production.
Gital highlighted the importance of backyard gardening as a globally recognized farming system, adding that the training would introduce farmers to Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) to increase food production, create jobs, and fight hunger.
BSADP Programme Manager, Ya’u Muhammad, emphasized that backyard gardening plays a key role in mitigating climate change effects such as erratic rainfall and flooding.
“Our goal is to equip youths and women with the knowledge of backyard farming to improve food supply, generate employment, and reduce hunger,” he said.
Hajiya Hauwa’u, North-East Zonal Coordinator of NANT, noted that the program also aims to support petty traders who lost their businesses by encouraging them to venture into agriculture.
“We are empowering them with backyard gardening skills, which require minimal capital, to help them rebuild their livelihoods,” she stated.
