Bauchi Unveils Bold Multi-Sectoral Plan to Tackle Malnutrition
By Ahmed Ahmed
Bauchi State has launched the Multi-Sectoral Plan of Action for Food and Nutrition (BSMSPAN) 2024-2028, a strategic initiative aimed at addressing food insecurity and improving nutrition, particularly among children under five and women.
The plan, unveiled at the Deputy Governor’s Office on Wednesday, integrates efforts across key sectors, including agriculture, health, social protection, education, and water and sanitation. It aligns with national and global nutrition goals, such as the Zero Hunger Challenge (ZHC), which seeks to eliminate childhood stunting.
Deputy Governor Mohammed Jatau reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to combating malnutrition, emphasizing that Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed’s leadership is prioritizing food security and child health.
“The state has identified nine priority areas to improve nutrition, and we are committed to strengthening inter-sectoral collaboration, financial support, and accountability mechanisms to achieve these ambitious targets,” Jatau stated.
The government has also increased funding for critical nutrition programs, including the Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) and Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF).
The launch saw strong backing from international organizations such as UNICEF, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Alive & Thrive, and FHI360, all of whom pledged full support for the initiative.
The Catalyzing Strengthened Policy Action for Healthy Diets and Resilience (CASCADE) project, which played a key role in developing the plan, aims to enhance food security and ensure access to nutritious, locally available foods.
Commissioner for Budget, Economic Planning, and Multilateral Coordination, Amina Katagum, represented by Permanent Secretary Jibrin Yusuf, underscored the importance of sustainable solutions.
“This plan is a game-changer in our fight against malnutrition. With proper implementation, Bauchi State will witness a significant reduction in child malnutrition and an overall improvement in public health,” she said.
The initiative aims to ensure that no child in Bauchi suffers from malnutrition, leveraging community-driven solutions and locally sourced nutritious foods.
With a coordinated approach and strong partnerships, Bauchi State is setting the stage for a healthier, well-nourished future for its residents.
