Body of Missing Congolese Student Alexandra Lumbayi Found in Quebec
The body of 21-year-old Alexandra Martine Diengo Lumbayi, a Congolese student at Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, was recovered from the St. Maurice River on Tuesday morning.
Lumbayi was last seen on October 2 on Saint-Quentin Island, and her mother, Rosemine Ndjondo, reported her missing after losing contact. A widespread search effort ensued, involving local police, students, and members of the Congolese, Cameroonian, and Senegalese community.
A kayaker discovered Lumbayi’s body around 10:20 a.m. Tuesday between the Kruger Wayagamack Inc. property and the marina. The coroner confirmed her identity later that day.
Ndjondo had taken to social media to plead for help, sharing a heartfelt video on TikTok. “I haven’t been drinking, I’m not eating, I’m not sleeping. I don’t even know how to close my eyes anymore or how to live,” she said, tearfully.
Provincial police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Lumbayi’s death. The community remains in shock, and students and friends have expressed their condolences to Lumbayi’s family.
This tragic incident has sparked an outpouring of support from the local community and beyond, highlighting the close-knit ties between international students and their adopted cities.
