Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has announced the setup of a Mining Development Company (MDC) to harness 1.31 billion tonnes of limestones, gypsum, and other undeveloped solid minerals in the state.
According to him, the pioneering managing director of the firm is Engr. Bamodu Yerima, a geologist.
The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Digital and Strategic Communication, Yusuf Ali, disclosed this on Sunday in Damaturu.
“The task before Yerima is to harness the untapped tonnes of solid mineral resources, including limestones, gypsum, potash, and silica, which are critical in the industrial sector of the economy.”
Highlighting the importance of mining solid minerals, Buni said, “The state government’s mining firm will also woo investors to create job opportunities in boosting internally generated revenues (IGR) and community livelihoods,” noting that this could sustain the state’s economic growth and development.
Besides the attraction of investors, the governor charged the MD to conduct feasibility studies on the solid mineral deposits that are commercially viable for the investors to develop them as industrial raw materials.
He added that the move underscored the administration’s commitment to the full exploration and development of about 1.31 billion tons of solid minerals.
He added that the establishment of the mining development firm aligns with the State’s Agency for Public Private Partnership and Investment Promotion (APPPIP).
He stated that the investment promotion is a strategy in opening up the state for investors with economic opportunities in the various economic sectors, including agriculture and livestock.
“Our policy initiatives will create a diversified and resilient economy that will benefit the forthcoming generations,” he said.
