The Minister of Defence, Lieutenant General Christopher Musa (rtd) has ordered troops of the Northeast Joint Task Force under Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) to shoot terrorists at sight in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states. The General gave the order, while addressing troops along with the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle on Tuesday at the 212 Battalion Maimalari Cantonment parade ground, Maiduguri. He said, gone are the days when soldiers continue to complain of waiting for orders to shoot, before neutralizing any terrorists in the insurgency-affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe. Commending the gallant troops of the battalion, Musa said: “We are proud of every one of you. We will support you with your operations. Nigerians are praying for all of you in the ongoing counter-terrorism operations in the Northeast. “The President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has increased your monthly salaries, and this is to show you that in the ongoing counter-terrorism commitment of the President to your welfare." He further assured them that the President has released a large sum of money for the procurement of modern fighting equipment, aircrafts, ammunition, drones, and other enablers to bring this 17-year war to an end. “You have been given an express order today to shoot any terrorists on sight," he said, warning that they should not indulge in illicit acts, and drugs abuse. He said that the troops' duty is to kill Boko Haram terrorists in any of three affected states in the region. Speaking earlier during his courtesy call on the Borno State Deputy Governor, Umar Usman Kadafur, the Minister said that their visit was to sympathize with the people of the state, following the recent multiple bomb blasts of Boko Haram terrorists at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital ( UMTH), Maiduguri Monday Market, and the Post Office Area. He added that the visit was also to convey the Federal Government’s condolences and to assess the security situation in the state, particularly the border communities with Cameroon, Chad and Niger. The Minister, therefore condemned the suicide bombing attacks and other other explosions recently recorded in the state, lamenting that such acts of violence do not represent any religion or legitimate cause of killing people. At the Shehu of Borno’s palace, the Minister said,” We are here to see the good people of Borno State, where the unfortunate incidents occurred with loss of 28 lives. "The President has directed me and the Minister of State for Defence to commiserate with you,’ the minister told the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi. He also assured residents of the state that President Tinubu and his cabinet members were deeply concerned about the attacks and were committed to preventing a recurrence in the future. "I want to assure the people of the state and the entire North-East that such occurrences would not happen again," said the retired General. Beyond the sympathy visit of Borno residents, the General stated: "We are here in Maiduguri to review what has happened and assess what can be done differently to bring an end to the approximately 17 years of terrorism that claimed over 50,000 lives in the region On his part, the Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Matawalle Bello reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to end insurgency across the country. "I want to assure you, Your Royal Highness, that you will see changes within a month,’ he said, expressing his optimism about government's to end the war in the three affected states in the Northeast.
