Chad’s President Deby Promoted to Marshal Ahead of Elections
Chad’s President, General Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, has been promoted to marshal in an official ceremony, a title previously held by his late father and former president, Idriss Deby Itno. This promotion was made possible by the National Transition Council’s overwhelming vote in favor of elevating Deby to marshal.
The ceremony, held at the presidential palace, marked a significant occasion, with Deby being recognized for his services to the nation and numerous military victories both within and outside Chad. This promotion comes just three weeks before the country’s legislative and local elections, scheduled for December 29.
Notably, Deby’s father was also declared marshal in 2020, following a successful offensive against Boko Haram in the Lake Chad region. The elder Deby led Chad for 30 years before being killed by rebels in 2021. His son, General Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, seized power with military support and was later legitimized in a disputed presidential election in May 2024.
